Sugarcane is a popular crop in Vietnam for sugar production. Sugarcane body after being pressed to get the juice is fermented, which is called bagasse fermentation.
Sterilization method of bagasse fermentation
Bagasse is a waste product that is suitable for growth of fungi and bacteria in nature. Total aerobic bacteria contained in bagasse 109-1010 cells / g and mold, yeast 106-107 cells / g. These bioburden species grow very rapidly and compete for nutrients with active fermenters.
The bagasse substrates are sterilized by gamma irradiation and steam. When comparing the growth of fermentation microorganisms on steam sterilized and irradiated substrates, they are not affected and grow normally. For gamma irradiation, the radiation dose of 15 kGy is enough to inactivate all molds and yeasts in the substrate. This sterilization method has many advantages when sterilizing a large number of substrates.
